The bear as the guardian of the forest is a symbol of strength, courage and protection, but it also represents cultural identity among Indigenous Peoples. It serves as a reminder of sustainable use of resources, as well as the protection of natural habitats to maintain balance in the ecosystem.

The bear is not only a strong symbol in Canada, but also widely found in the regional forests. The work gains its special significance from the fact that A.P. Rott has installed a second, identical bear, BEAR.2, in Germany, which stands in dialogue with BEAR.1. THE TRANSATLANTIC BEARS: a silent sign for understanding across distance, a reflection on contemplating connections in life.

BEAR.1 has its permanent place in Canada.Its identical double, BEAR.2, is treated as an art object and is temporarily installed on a traffic island in Friedrichsdorf, Germany, in 2026.
