A truly monumental sculpture.

Today, A.P. Rott’s Suncatcher still reflects the sky above

Soon, it will mirror the natural beauty of Canada.

Thousands of kilometres away – and yet beneath the same sky.

Around 750 individual components were shaped, fitted, welded and polished for the stainless-steel sculpture by masters of their craft over thousands of hours of work. The elaborate fabrication process at Arnold Metallbau took the sculpture from Friedrichsdorf to the company’s facility in Thuringia. There, the Suncatcher was finally completed in its full dimensions for the first time: almost nine metres high and weighing around 2.2 tonnes.

Yet for the artist A.P. Rott, the monumental nature of his work lies not in its dimensions alone. The Suncatcher gives form to one of his fundamental reflections: “There is no energy without the sun.” Its polished surfaces capture light, sky, nature and people. In this way, the sculpture changes with its surroundings – and its surroundings become part of the artwork.

Now it will be carefully dismantled and packed for its journey. In an overseas container, it will travel across the Atlantic to Canada. There, the Suncatcher will find its permanent home in a nature park, in the middle of a lake.

A different place. A different continent. The same sky.
